Biography

The full story

Kurt “Cobra” Arnold, who performs as The Mighty Cobra, is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer. Born in Grenada, West Indies and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he draws on both in a cross-genre blend of reggae, hip hop, and soca.

He came up in Crown Heights in the 1990s, rapping on street corners and in cyphers before taking the stage as Caveman — performing original songs and freestyles at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Cafe Wha?, Village Underground, and regularly at Groove. That early work lived in the harsh survival mode of the streets, carried by a humor that offered a way out of it.

The Cabaret Clubs of New York recognized him with an award for outstanding performance. Then came 9/11, and the music went quiet.

He returns now as The Mighty Cobra, writing again in response to injustice at home and abroad. The new work is conscious music, shaped by the roots he started from and the West Indian Brooklyn that raised him. Recent releases include the Set the Pace EP and the single ‘It’s No Happy Birthday.’
